BECOMING A CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGIST
The clinical pharmacologists has an important role in ensuring rational use of drugs, in translating pharmacological concepts from the bench to the clinic, in clinical drug development, and in teaching the discipline to medical students. In The Netherlands, the training programme for clinical pharmacology takes 1-2 years and encompasses items such as rational pharmacotherapy, pharmacokinetics and -dynamics, therapeutic drug monitoring, pharmacogenomics and genotyping, individualized drug therapy, drug toxicology, teaching, clinical pharmacological research, and training in Good Clinical Practice.
RECIPE offers at AmsterdamUMC a clinical pharmacology training programme for hospital pharmacists, internists (trainee), and other (non) medical doctors conducting research in clinical pharmacology. The training programme has been accredited by the Dutch Society for Clinical Pharmacology & Biopharmacy (NVKF&B).
Main tasks as a clinical pharmacologist trainee at AmsterdamUMC are:
• Participating in the pharmacotherapy team;
• Contributing to the monthly clinical pharmacology meeting;
• Teaching and supervising medical students;
• Teaching junior doctors in the clinical practice;
• Developing innovative under- and postgraduate education;
• Contributing to research project on pharmacotherapy education;
• Internships at the hospital pharmacy of the VUmc;
• Internships at the Dutch Medicines Evaluation Board (CBG), Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre Lareb and Centre for Human Drug Research (CHDR).
